Treatment

Rhizotomy is a surgical procedure that destroys the nerves that carry pain signals from the facet joints. The nerve is cauterized by a radiofrequency probe passed via a special needle. The candidates for this procedure are patients who already underwent a series of successful nerve blocks that have identified the source of pain. This procedure can effectively relieve chronic back pain and in many cases muscle spasms. The nerves will grow back over time and the patient might need to receive a treatment again within a year.

When you return home, you may notice some bruising, soreness, or swelling at the injection site. You may experience muscle spasms up to a week. Most patients are able to go back to work and perform normal daily activities the next day after a facet rhizotomy. The benefit from this procedure is typically experienced within 2 weeks of the procedure, and this typically lasts 8-12 months.
